Portuguese Trade Deficit Narrow

Portuguese trade deficit narrowed in the July to September period from the previous year. The trade deficit totaled EUR 4.37 billion in the July to September period, narrowing from EUR 5.02 billion deficit a year ago.

Exports increased 14.6% on an annual basis to EUR 9.18 billion in the third quarter from EUR 8.02 billion last year.

At the same time, imports grew 4% to EUR 13.56 billion.

 

OECD sees Portugal economy stagnating

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) forecasts a stagnation in the economic growth of Portugal, according to data released yesterday.

The indicator calculated by the institution stabilised, showing that the country has already reached its peak in terms of growth.

In August 2010, OECD’s indicator for Portugal stood at 102.03 points, slightly above the 101.99 points registered a month ago. The increase is practically insignificant compared to the latest large monthly expansion by 0.21 points in April 2010.

The indicator for Portugal booked substantial rises in the period between September 2009 and April 2010. After that, from May to July 2010, the levels started falling.
